The AVI
Maker Help Page
This is the help page for the AVI Maker tool,
which is part of the KarVCD toolset. The purpose of this tool is to combine the
sound contained in a WAVE file with the lyrics contained in a KAR file to
create an AVI movie. This AVI file can be later converted to MPEG with the MPEG
encoder tool and then written to a VCD.
Let us take
a look at the AVI Maker window fields and buttons:

At the top
of the AVI Maker dialog there is the Input Files group of controls that
let you select the input KAR and WAVE files. For each file type there is:
¨
File name. This field shows the name of the
input file.
¨
Browse. This button lets you select
another file.
Bellow the Input
Files group there is the AVI file group, which includes:
¨
File name. This field shows the name of the
output AVI file.
¨
Browse. This button lets you select
another AVI file.
Bellow the AVI
file group there are two other groups:
¨
Video Standard. This group has two radio buttons
that let you select the video format that the output AVI file will have.
¨
Offset. The controls in this group let you
align the WAVE file with the lyrics contained in the KAR file.
Follows a
description of the remaining elements:
¨
Progress bar. This control shows the progress as
the AVI file is being created.
¨
Start. This button initiates the creation
process.
¨
Stop. This button stops the creation process.
¨
Play. This button lets you view the AVI file
created, using whichever player is defined externally for AVI files.
¨
Status. This field shows you the AVI time
already processed versus the total process time.
¨
Help. This button shows you the file that you are
now reading.
¨
Close. This button closes the AVI Maker
Dialog and returns you to the Main Window.
The operation of the Player is straightforward:
You select the input and output files, choose the video standard, set the
offset and hit Start.
It is very
important to select a video standard (PAL or NTSC) compatible with the
equipment where you will be playing the VCD (e. g. DVD player and TV set).
Although many modern equipments are multistandard, some are not and this may
cause problems during playback. Usually in North America the standard to use is
NTSC, in Europe it will be PAL.
The WAVE
file is the one that commands the AVI creation process. The output file will
have the duration of the WAVE file. The Offset group of controls lets
you align the WAVE file with the lyrics contained in the KAR file. The offset
can be positive or negative.
A positive
offset value will cause the beginning of the WAVE file to be cut. This is very
useful for instance to skip the “beat marks” that some files have at the
beginning.
A negative
offset will cause the beginning of the lyrics to be skipped. This may be used
to skip the credits or dedications that some KAR files have at the beginning.
When you
close the AVI Maker Dialog with the Close button, the program will set
the output file as the AVI file in the main window. Before doing this, the
program makes sure that the output file does in fact exist.
